The Indian Army  will be ‘inducting woman as Jawans’. This will be initiated with online registration for recruitment in the corps of military police.

Three months ago, the government had announced that women will be inducted in the force in the ‘Personnel Below Officer Rank’ (PBOR) category. This is the first time for the Indian Armed Forces to recruit women as soldiers. Women had been taken in areas of education, medical, legal and engineer wings but not as Jawans. This is a historic first and a milestone for the Indian Army and the women population.

The idea was projected by Army Chief General Bipin Rawat when he took charge of the force. The Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharam cleared the decks for induction in January 2019. She said the government has taken a historic decision to induct women in the military police and their roles would include investigating crime cases of rape and molestation and assisting the Army in field operations whenever required.

Women will be inducted in a graded manner to eventually comprise 20 per cent of total Corps of Military Police. The role of the military police includes policing cantonments and Army establishments, preventing the breach of rules and regulations by soldiers, maintaining movement of soldiers as well as logistics during peace and war, handling prisoners of war and extending aid to civil police.

In November 2018, General Rawat had said there are several other fields where the Army was thinking of inducting women.

General Rawat said “We are not yet ready for that (women in combat roles) as facilities have to be created within. Women also need to be prepared for that kind of hardships.
